The Backup Generator Process

Residential backup generators work by providing power to your utilities. When your utility power fails, the generator turns on automatically and provides power by following just four simple steps:

1. Your Utility Power is Lost

When a power outage occurs, your home's connection to the utility grid is interrupted.

2. Your Generator Detects a Problem

Backup generators are equipped with advanced sensors that automatically detect the power loss and activate the system.

3. Power is Transferred through ATS

Next, the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) takes control, seamlessly switching your home’s power source from the utility grid to your generator.

4. Electricity is Restored

Within seconds, your generator will start supplying electricity to your home, ensuring power until the utility power is restored.

1. Consultation and Scheduling

Contact Stans to start your generator installation process. Our dispatch team will schedule your initial consultation. Your Project Manager will assess your unique generator requirements and provide you with a proposal. If there are no unusual plumbing or electrical concerns, the proposal can generally be provided on the spot. This first step ensures a seamless process right from the start.

2. Detailed Planning and Permit Acquisition

Your installation team will include your Project Manager, Install Manager, Plumber, and Electrician. Before starting any work, the team will conduct a thorough onsite walkthrough. Stan’s will also handle the necessary paperwork, including obtaining electrical and plumbing permits. A site or plot survey and an HOA approval letter may also be required at this phase.

3. Installation and Finalization

Once all approvals and permits have been obtained, we’ll schedule your generator installation. Your Plumber will complete the installation and coordinate the City inspection. Once approved, your Electrician will commission the generator and facilitate the closure of the permits. Weather permitting, we typically complete the installation within 4-5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to install a home generator?

The installation time can vary depending on the specific requirements of your home. Our team will provide an estimated timeline during the consultation process.

Do I need to turn it on when my power goes out?

We offer both standby (automatic) and manual generators. Standby generators are designed to switch on automatically when the grid power is lost, while manual generators do require manual activation.

Though more expensive than manual generators, standby generators are the preferred option, especially for homeowners who are often away from home, as they guarantee electricity in the event of an outage.

To learn more, contact our team to discuss your options.

Do I need to refuel the generator during an outage?

Our Generac generators can be connected to your home’s natural gas line, and can run on natural gas or liquid propane, eliminating the need for manual refueling.

How long will my home generator last?

If you purchase a generator with an air-cooled engine, as well as ensure it receives regular maintenance from a qualified electrician, you can expect your generator to last up to 40 years or longer.
