For 2016, Congress reactivated tax credits for homeowners who make home energy improvements. Tax credits are deducted from the total tax owed…you could reduce your tax payment up to $500.

All of these credits are tied to specific qualifying improvements, listed below.

Solar Screens, Attic Insulation, and Duct Improvements

For any of these improvements that include any insulation material or system designed to reduce heat loss or gain on a dwelling, you can receive a credit for 10% off the material costs, up to $500.

Central A/C with Enhanced Blowers

Receive a credit of up to $350 per system.

Air conditioning systems must meet the following criteria:

  • Split systems
    • Minimum: 15 SEER / 12.5 EER
  • Packaged systems
    • Minimum: 15 SEER / 12 EER

Heat Pumps

Receive a credit of up to $300 per system.

Heat Pump systems must meet the following criteria:

  • Split systems
    • Minimum: 15 SEER / 12.5 EER / 8.5 HSPF
  • Packaged systems
    • Minimum: 15 SEER / 12 EER / 8.2 HSPF

Gas Furnaces

Receive a $150 tax credit for minimum 95% AFUE furnaces
